Re: Prices for cat grooming
Just wondering what methods you use to secure a cat? I know that when my dog has been groomed that they use a tether line above his head and often secure at least at two points.

Re: Prices for cat grooming
Cats generally aren't secured at all, just need to keep a good hold on their scruff, in the bath some groomers find it easier to use a figure 8 harness on them.
I just attended a seminar by Danelle German from the national cat groomers institute and can't wait to start doing more cats.

Re: Prices for cat grooming
I have all kinds of fancy cat harnesses and restraints! They hang on a hook on the wall!
The best restrainer I have is called "Debbie" my helper. All we do since cat school is scruff. Sometimes they just stand there like a little doggie or sit in the bath with a minimal scruff. I only have a few that Debbie says "I don't like you" at.

cat grooming
hi new to this so see how i go, I have a salon in SA and i groom cats, the first thing i do is clip their toe nails ( less scratches) and if they are a bit grumpy i use a cat muzzle, this covers their whole face so they can't bite, i charge from $35 up to $60 depending on what they need, I only take 1/2 hour to clip a cat off, 1 hour if bathing , abit longer for cage dry. I have only had to turn away one cat, a bit ferral. Hope this helps someone cheers

I charge depending on size and I often let the client stay and hold the cat , I dont do many and only one client wants me to wash her cat ,which I charge extra for . For just a clip that takes 20 min I charge $50 as I don't sedate like the vets do . I am selective with my feline clips , have ended up badly bitten by both cats and dogs , cats are just more a challenge .

Re: Prices for cat grooming
Ok so my prices are now,$30 for a short haired co-operative cat for a wash and dry $50 for a bath, blow dry, brush out and belly/bum clip. $80 for a lion cut including a bath, blow dry. Like with my dog clients bath is not optional as its required to get a good finish in my opinion especially since cats are very greasy. All prices include nails and soft claw application.

OMG you cat groomers deserve an award for bravery! I've only done one very quiet ragdoll and it was fantastic. I felt so sorry for it because it meowed piteously - but didn't put a paw wrong

Showpony, how would pantyhose work. Wouldnt the teeth penetrate it?

Re: Prices for cat grooming
I don't mind doing cats at all. Generally they are quicker than dogs and I charge $50 for a shave. I'm mobile and the first time I do a cat, I ask the owner to come in and hold it. Some owners are great, some are stress-heads and I ask them nicely to leave and finish the job alone. Yes I've had a few scratches, but I'm quicker than them and know the signs!! I won't wash cats unless it's clear that they are struggling to lick and clean themselves.

Re: Prices for cat grooming
Good God. I've been clipping cats for few years (no sedation) with no probs. Keep atmosphere relaxed. A bit like a duck - calm on the top and paddling like mad underneath. If any get testy I do a back massage - they relax then. Just go gently. The bath water has to be fairly warm and I talk to them. Make it quick, wrap in big towel, tie securely and dry off. Been lucky I guess. Usually clip off with a 7 blade, scissor legs, tail and head. If really matted underneath use a finer blade. Take a few breathers so they don't get stressed. Also a trailer with a view from the table is good as I find they watch the birds, trees, etc. Whatever.

sedation is dangerous
I'm wondering whether you administer the sedation to cats for grooming, and if so, what are your qualifications?petgroomaustralia wrote:95 for anything done to a cat plus 35 for sedation. All are sedated and fast asleep and none get a bath. I do a lot of cats and they are easy money because they take less than 30 mins. Some get shaved off, some have lion clips, some are tummy and sani shaves and the rest combed out. I would never do them without sedation. Much too dangerous, been there, done that with a cat bite.

Hi bigorangecat, petgroomaustralia hasn't been on here for a while I don't think, but she works exclusively at vet clinincs, and I assume that the vets would be doing the administration of any sedation.
