Help with training
Hello
My dream is to re-train as a dog groomer and I am finally in a position to start looking into it
I have been looking online at courses that I may be able to take, as ideally I would do this is in the evenings or weekends - I work full time and don't really want to give up my job until I am in a position to do so.
I have been told that there are no formal qualifications in Australia and that I don't need to do any training as a dog groomer because 'anyone can do it' - this was not what I wanted to hear! I really want to so this properly and know everything I can about grooming (obviously alot of this comes from hands on experience) but I wonder if you can help me and let me know exactly what courses I can take so that I can learn as much as I can?
Thanks

Re: Help with training
Hi,
Can you get a week or two as holiday leave from work? If you can the Groomers Friend course in Ulladulla NSW is REALLY good! I'm doing it at the moment and have just completed the first week. You can do one week or two, whatever you can get off work. Jodie is lovely and I have learnt so much in my first week!!!

Re: Help with training
In NSW I would suggest the courses offered by Deb Ryan http://www.doggroomingaustralia.com.au/. The courses are nationally recognised and not just a printed "certificate". If you wait there is a new qualification that has just been developed by industry and it is in the final stages of government approval. Contact Deb for details.

Thank you both for your replies. So at the moment, are there any accredited courses where I would receive a formal qualification, or would I need to wait for the new one mentioned?

Re: Help with training
Hi, I've just started an intensive grooming course with The Grooming School. It's a great small group environment with personalised training. I'm also new to the grooming industry and am happy to give updates on my experiences. I found there wasn't a lot of information out there on grooming training so I started a blog. Feel free to take a look, I'll update it later tonight. http://groomingadventure.blogspot.com.au/

Plus 1 on the grooming school ...I recently did a 10 day advanced training session (i have been grooming 12 years) & currently my staff member goes every Monday for her advanced training . They cater the course to suit you & your skills & are the nicest people ...cant speak well enough of Chris & Les :-) give them a call

Re: Help with training
Deb Ryan in my opinion is by far the best that you can be trained by. Her course is a 4 week course which includes bathing, clipping and scissoring and she also provides from memory 4 manuals and is amazingly good. I did my course with Deb in July 2009 and then my husband did the course in November 2012. We have a home based business and our phone rings off the hook and most coming from word of mouth. If you could do here course you will never look back.

Re: Help with training
Hi Everyone, I just join the forum today. I am was also researching on courses and qualifications. My wife and myself are from Melbourne. Currently we are out of town in Singapore for a couple of months. We plan to take the opportunity and time available over weekends to attend a pet grooming course. We finally selected a professional grooming course over the weekend which is offered by one of the grooming school in Singapore. The course is about 220 hours in three stages. We will be enrolling for the basic stage soon hope to start as soon as possible in July. After I hope to gain some experiances by volunteering or part time. Targeting by the time we arrive back home we can hit the ground and run. Looking to work for a pet salon, store or franchises. Lets keep in touch will share my experiances at the course soon.
