Extreme flaky skin
i was wondering if anyone might have some constructive ideas about this dog.
She seems like a normally healthy dog. No smell,no itchy/scratchy,no ear problems ,no apparent skin issue etc however ,she sheds an EXTREME amount of skin.
I hope you can see in the pictures . All the white flakes on the table are skin, and look carefully you can see it all amongst the brushed out hair too.,and this is just what is left after washing a lot of skin down with the bath rinse,as well as blowing a whole lot more of with the HV ! No vet seems to have come up with a logical explantion, nor cure.
Excuse the grooming but it was strictly a bath /brush out today NO trimming . I did not do that face trim ,mum did ! they didnt want ANY hair off anywhere. this is the second time i have washed her and it was just the same with her skin last time.
TIA

Guess dogs get dandruff too....!!!! Maybe try Selsun blue.....or a coal tar shampoo....What do the owners use to wash her in in between your grooms Maybe even wool mix might help ????

Re: Extreme flaky skin
Do they wash between visits to you ? if so WHAT are they using? something from the supermarket??? what are they feeding..... a little oil added to food MIGHT help... does this dog site right on top of the heater as this can cause skin to dry out... apart from that I just don't know

Re: Extreme flaky skin
Firstly... Ewwwwww!!!!! Gross!
1) strict food testing (takes months to do. ie: a few weeks on this, few weeks on that)
2) malaseb/sebolyse family 1-2 times per week
3) sardines and omega 3 oils added wouldn't hurt either
My saluki had bad skin, scabby/flakey. Now well controlled on raw kangaroo mince and Advance Dry food (not a fan of Advance but it worked for him, other better premium foods did not). Also has malaseb bath weekly.
Basically if they are not prepared to do intense food trials, then they will have a maltese-lamington for life.
The Skin Clinic says that the largest proportion of skin problems are from diet.

Re: Extreme flaky skin
Molly-Wog had HORRIBLE skin when we got her flaked all over the house... We actually used Head and sholder in the end as nothing was clearing it and IT WORKED.. LOL.... I also told it is good for guinea pigs so this means there cannot be anything to BAD in it...
But other than that i have NO idea LOL..
OH and i think she is ADORABLE lol.... bethany is growing out and doesn't look much different LOL..

Re: Extreme flaky skin
yep,i hear what you're all saying ,and appreciate the input.
I,like all of us,have seen many a 'skin issue' dog in my 23 or so years behind a grooming table, but i have NEVER seen a dog with this funk ! there seems to be absolutely zilch wrong with her skin...no odour,no scabs,no pink or red or dark blotches,no itching....just what appears to be healthy skin. Obviously there is something going on though .
I should clarify ,They have spent $1,000's at the vet,not that it counts for much with some vets ! & have done a lot of the things suggested.
The skin flakes are really big,and dont sit in the coat like dandruff. It seems to sit on the dogs body like a sheet and peels out when rubbed and groomed

It could be a genetic abnormality.

Re: Extreme flaky skin
Vets are no good at stuff like this...needs a specialist.
I hope they haven't paid 1000's to a local vet coz it would be very unethical not to refer them to a specialist. If owner chooses not to see a specialist, then ok, but a local vet should be ashamed to continually take money for something they cannot treat successfully.
(One of my pet hates, as if it's not obvious, is vets who won't admit they can't help and their refusal to send to a specialist!!)

I couldnt agree more Andie ....
sad thing is owners are often scared off by 'expensive' referals. They just dont get it,and back for some more of the same. Usually malaseb & cortisone

Re: Extreme flaky skin
Most likely a diet thing.
Get them to add an egg a week to the food, whole egg, shell and all, crushed up and mixed in.
