Jerry the Bushfire Cat

Post by Westie on Sun Apr 05, 2009 8:33 pm

We picked up our little man today and what an angel he was allllll day I love you . Volunteers at the bushfire dog wash day might remember a client who was fostering an orphaned cat? Well she agreed to let us have him so we collected him from his foster Mum's at Doreen this morning we had a break at Karen's and he enjoyed a stretch, feed and use of the litter tray there Smile then onto home where he has sussed out all the best beds and nap spots... the dogs are not sure what to make of him and we're running around madly closing doors to keep him in while he gets used to his new home cos the others just come and go inside as they please Rolling Eyes . He's 14 and still healing from burns to all four legs but off painkillers now. Apparently the internal burns take longer to heal so he's still limping, altho that might be his age as well. So good natured and loving and so tolerant. Will post photos when downloaded. Ahhh, life's good Smile

PS God bless the Whittlesea Vet (who let us use their carpark for the bushfire dog wash day) who have provided all of Jerry's vet care free and he is one of many they have treated without any payment. Don't know how they keep their business going but their blood's worth bottling I love you There are over 30 cats still there or in foster homes waiting to be reunited with owners but apparently there are still good news stories happening even this far down the track. No dogs to reunite tho, those that didn't get out with their owners didn't survive Sad

So pleased to hear another fire victim has had a good outcome.

I did volunteer work at Whittlesea after the fires, treating (mainly) cats - changing their dressings etc. The first cat we did was called Marmelade, an entire male!! he was in intense pain - one of his back legs had burns to the bone, and one foot had gone "bad", meaning it would probably have to come off, but so accepting of our bumbling efforts. Fortunately he was our first "victim" as subsequent cats were a hell of a less accomodating. I now know how to control a cat!!

My husband is vehemently against a cat, but had softened to tails of Marmalade, but I can't track him down - I just hope he has gone back to his original home.

Last I heard (just last week) there are 50 odd cats who's owners don't want them, can't have them or they have passed. They are living in a house with volunteers doing the kitty litter thing.

You probably met Jerry's foster mum, Fiona. She has been volunteering at the Whittlesea Vet and has now been offered a job there. She has been helping match cats with owners and says that there are still many to home altho some are feral and will probably not be able to go to new homes. Jerry has been living in a bedroom since he moved in with her and has now taken over our room which is upsetting the dogs but it will only be for a while till we acclimitise him. He is so affectionate and so resilient, been thro a lot in his 14 years but still able to cope with another lifechange I love you

Bless his little shaved paws, Jerry is doing very well! He is loving living in my daughter's room, complete with TV, toys and all the necessities. He has whole house time when we come home then usually retreats when the whole furfamily come in to drive him mad. He's so cruisey tho, just not overly bothered by anything. I guess when you've lived 14 years, then gone thro a bushfire, you learn to roll with the punches if you want to keep going Very Happy We love him to bits I love you

Oh Barb, he's gorgeous!! Just like my boy i had many years ago. He certainly doesn't look 14 years old, he doesn't even look like a senior at all. So glad he's settled in well... may he live a long and happy life with you!!!!

I want a cat badly. I want a siamese or an oriental. Been dwelling on this for months and months now. Rolling Eyes

Things are going v well, x fingers! The dogs are giving him some space tho sometimes they can't help themselves and do a bit of 'rushing' at the newest member of the family Rolling Eyes Jerry has a cozy safe space and spends a lot of time sleeping but lets us know when he wants out to explore then he checks out all the bedrooms and watches TV with us in the lounge I love you He is a real smoocher, loves cuddles and can hold quite a good coversation Very Happy
Thanks everyone for your good wishes, I too hope our wee man will live out his remaining years in peace and happiness. He has the cruisiest temperament so I think he'll do well. Very Happy
