Dont faint, I actually groomed my poodle!!!

Post by petgroomaustralia on Mon Mar 09, 2009 9:49 pm

Poor Tinkerbell usually looks like a mop on legs. She's growing out of her bondi clip now that the hot weather is over. I also bathed my powderpuff and clipped his face and trimmed his feet, he is also growing out his body a bit but after handscissoring the poodle I couldnt be bothered tidying his body. Hoover got a bath too, after he gets his cologne he always turns around and smells it on his back!!!

They look cute, I keep Mingo like Tinkerbelle alot in the summer. But isn't it the truth, she doesn't get groomed as often as I would like, just tooo busy or tired, I usually let my helper bathe and fluff her on Saturdays but she's not really good at it yet, but it is good practice for her, and at least Mingo gets a bath and smells nice!

They may be long but they are thin and her tail is no better, she needs hair extensions. She had never had them cut and a couple of years ago my ex boyfriend decided to bath her for me and mysteriously one of her ears was a lot shorter than the other even though he swears he didnt cut it!!!!!

I shaved Mingo's ears down in Sept. They are growing slowly, but I swear they are thicker..

What are your opinions on this concept? And also, do you think it's true if you shave a puppy poo coat it makes it grow thicker?

So I should shave those ears off and start again...hmmm...have to put her in the german clip over winter then. I have shaved her tail off before, when she had puppies. Definately all hairy puppies should be kept as short as possible till their adult coat comes in, makes their adult coats much nicer, otherwise some of them take a few years to get a decent coat. Hard to convince the owners though, but the ones who have taken this advice are now glad they did.

Linda and Tammy, can you explain to me how that works where you shouldn't shave a dog's coat under a certain age. Are you just talking 7f's? Does it only affect certain breeds? Can you keep it longer than a 7f without hurting the coat? What age is safe?

Thanks!! Lisa.

its mostly debated among the Poodle fraternity....for and against stripping baby puppies off with a 7#

Troy didnt get clipped back till nearly 12 months, and his coat is good ,getting better all the time, but my Mini boy that i lost to a snake last year,i stripped him back at 3 months....looked like sh!t when i did it,but that boy had a fantabulistic coat!

So are you saying that if you clipped at a longer length then their coat would be OK?? If so, what length is 'safe'?

Any length at any age is safe, except for a 40!!!

I like to start out with a #4 blade for the first clip, the dog doesn't look skinned and the owner can handle this length well, I didn't like to clip poodles off until between 5-6 months, BUT of cause if they are matted or the owner can't handle looking after the coat you have to use your judgement, if the dog is always going to be clipped short than I can't see why we need the wait until they are older, its better for the dog/owner and its better to get them into a regular grooming schedule early.

I have heard Yankee breeders say they clip off babies to encourage thick coat - do you thnk the same rules apply. I have never been game on my Springers?
