How do you help a grieving dog

Post by DoggyDoos on Sun Aug 18, 2013 7:15 pm

On Saturday afternoon we had to say goodbye to our 12 year old dog Oliver.  He had become gravely ill and was found to be haemorrhaging into his abdomen, and also full of inoperable cancer in his abdomen.

Our other little rescue dog Rex, has never been an only dog in his life. He is also 12 years old.  He absolutely loved Oliver, they did everything together.  The problem is that Rex cries, wales and howls at night if he his left to sleep alone. It just beaks my heart even more.  Last night I slept in the spare bed and let him sleep with me.  However this can't be a long term solution, he needs to learn to sleep alone.

Does anyone have any tips on how to deal with a dog that is grieving the loss of their mate?

Thanks, Trish

I'm sorry for your loss Trish.

My aunty went through this recently when one of her dogs passed away the other 11yrs was lost without her mate, she would go to his bed every day and just stand their waiting and would also cry every night. the only thing i can tell you is it takes time, my aunty found trying to keep her routine as normal as possible and a long walk before bed would help her sleep. Hopes this helps

I'm so sorry to hear of your loss Trish.  It is never easy losing our furbabies.  You are in our thoughts. xx

Thanks Sarah.  It is hard letting them go, but I know he is now in a much better place.

So sad to hear of your loss and your little one's grieving....
When you are ready, maybe another little mate ? If you think a puppy would be too much there are heaps of golden oldies out there too. Sad

Thanks Meryl.  Rex is starting to sleep well on his own.  He still looks around the house and yard for Oliver, but that will pass as time goes by.  At some time in the future, when we are ready, we will probably adopt another adult rescue dog. I just need a bit of time.
