Dog grooming prices
OK I know many may not like to share, but I'm looking at uping my prices. to be honest if I'm going to stay in this game I need to make it worth my while! I do work from home so my costs aren't as high as some.
What do you charge for short clips, long clips, breed clips on small, med, large dogs?
what do you charge for standard poodles?
Looking forward to this one!

Re: Dog grooming prices
Even if you run your business from home you would be surprised at the running costs, the only real big difference is commercial rental but you save on fuel costs which is offset by wear on your shoes from walking to walk
Seriously though, happy to share but from my experience location dictates pricing, for example I charge $175 for a Samoyed which takes just on 2 hours or Bernese Mountain dog for $250, standard poodles start from $110. Then you have the average size Maltese/Shih Tzu, they start at @ $70, now if I was in Sydney for example I have been told average for a Maltese/Shih Tzu $55!
I increase my prices on the 1st Jan every year, I put up a notice in the Salon at the end of October and take it down at the end of Jan to inform my clients. Depending on size of dog I increase in multiples of $5
I can be a bit out there but it has worked for me for the last 4 years
Remember, "you run the business not the business run you"
Lets see some response from other forum members!

Re: Dog grooming prices
I'm working at home too, but yea. The work is hard enough that I still charge similar to the salons around me.
I'm probably actually too cheap with some clips, I'm pretty new to this business thing, but I guess when I've built my client base more and am busier I can put my prices up.
I'm quite far away from the city so I guess I have .. 'cheaper' clients here, there are a few budget groomers near me so the average price for a small clip here would be about 55.

Re: Dog grooming prices
Hi Guys, im mobile in western sydney, unfortunately most people out here don't have a lot of money so it is hard to set prices.
I charge
Bath short coat
Sml- $20
med- $25
Lrg-$30
X-larg $40
Bath long coat
Sml- $30
Med- $35
Lrg$40
X-larg- POA
Bath and clip
Sml- $55
Med$65
lrg $75
X-large-$90+
De-shedding extra $20-$40
Matted extra $10
I offer a frequent grooming package to try and encourage my clients to rebook, i go every 4 weeks alternating between a full clip and a tidy and they get a $5 discount each time.
After talking to Chris at the pet expo i will be revising and upping my prices come January, cause for the service i am supplying i feel am undercharging.
I have had quite a few clients say "is that all" when i say the price after the groom so i can't see my regulars having any probs with the increase.
Price does all depend on area though, go to Darwin and a small dog clip starts at $75!

Re: Dog grooming prices
Oh and matted dogs.....hate them! Well their owners actually who say, "a friend was looking after him for me" LOL I charge $10-$15 for average amount and $30 for lots! And it costs that in more frequent blade sharpening so I don't care!
I haven't charged for aggressive though. I'm pretty good with those types of dogs.
Hard to make money on big hairy dogs for sure Yapidiyap. Don't blame you for not doing them. In the time it takes to do one you could do 3 littlies!

Re: Dog grooming prices
Groomer, the reason I don't do large hairy dogs is cause 3 years ago I developed tendinitus in my right elbow. it took me 8 months of physio and a personal exercise routine which included stretching and strengthening to overcome it. It was so painful I couldn't pick a cup up. i thought my grooming days were over - and they only just begun. i have now injured my left elbow by whipersniping 6 months ago. So big brushouts are out of the question.

Re: Dog grooming prices
Hey all groomer out there,
I'm haven't start my own business as a groomer yet, but I groom/clip my dogs and sometime as a free services for my friends (also as getting more experiences too), but like as yapidiyap said, now sometimes (not very often), my fingers will shake? Is that some part of the sickness? lol Because I'm really afraid now.

Re: Dog grooming prices
That is not the symptoms that I had. I had pain in the elbow when I moved it in a certain way and also when I held clippers. I lost strength also in my grip. Wrestling littlies on the table didn't help neither. But my partner has elbow pain too but his spreads to his wrist and makes his hand tingle. So everyone is different. Just check it out with your doc first if you are concerned. I wouldn't let it put you off though if that's what you want.

Re: Dog grooming prices
Don't forget though if you're running the business from home, you won't have to pay commercial rents but you will be taxed Capital Gains tax when you sell your home. Well, that's in WA anyway.

Re: Dog grooming prices
Same in ACT, no plan on selling the house as the Salon will make a great man cave when I am retired from grooming

Re: Dog grooming prices
Prices vary all over Australia.
I'm getting annoyed with people who think that $60 for maintained coat or $70 for matted coat on Malt Shih Tzu is toooo expensive for mobile service especially when fuel cost are rising and the SUPA Stores prices start at $69 for production line service and you have to take the dog to them.
Thanks for your call...........

Re: Dog grooming prices
It took me a while to understand how to charge customers sometimes i would charge and then later think i should of charged more. Also because i do not yet have a proper set up at the begging i felt uncomfortable charging like somewhere well set up.
Once my salon is done, i will be definitely putting my prices up for all new customers and for those customers who are a pita. those customers who have come n a regular basis to me and who have gotten me many other customers will stay the same

Re: Dog grooming prices
Tails a waggin'...don't forget you don't have to pay for water, electricity or rent...and most salons pay the running expense of vehicles, just like the mobile groomers.

Re: Dog grooming prices
Sorry Tony not sure what you mean. I fill my tanks from tap at home and don't really use customers water unless need to fill. (valid reasons for this) Power is minimal. I did have repayments on set up of business, trailer and car but do own outright now. I still have to keep car well maintained, insurance like everyone else and my fuel cost would be higher driving around all day rather than to and from a salon. As a mobile, customers should also be paying for convienance of service to them. This covers my travel where I could be doing more dogs if salon based.
I may not have the overheads of salon however what price do you put on time and traffic ???

i agree with you tails. I have never been a mobile groomer but specially with the cost of petrol lately i do understand why you need to charge more

Re: Dog grooming prices
Well said Sarah. People forget that you can spend on average 1 1/2 to 2 hours a day sitting in your car driving to and from jobs. We need to be paid for that time. And you are right. We could groom more dogs in a day if we worked in a salon-based environment.

Re: Dog grooming prices
Too hard to be accurate on this as it can really vary. Possibly up to 80km for me at present since recent move. Today I would have travelled 45 kms to do 4 dogs in the same street. There is a groomer in this street that works from home. I know this groomer charges a minimum $5 -10 per groom more than me and has not been grooming that long. One of my 4 dogs came to me at one house as they live to far for me to travel. Ultimately you want your work just like this for the day all on top of one another. Again this doesn't always work like this. I book this street for the day and they do all the leg work and organise themselves. I'm happy to retain price for these clients.
