Bacterial and fungal infections
Hi everyone!!
Who grooms dogs with bacterial or fungal infections. I had a new customer want me to groom his dog which has suffered from hot spots through out its life, they would come and go. I could tell by the look of the dog that it had a staph infection so I said I would prefer not to groom the dog. What's every body's policy or procedure with this as a lot of dogs carry staph. So is staph so bad???

This has good information about staph. Its usually dogs with low immune system that will show signs but I think if you are going to accept the dog for grooming the best way to go about it is to make it your last dog of the day and then make sure any equipment you used is sanitised really well. 10% bleach kills everything ( including your lung lining so make sure you wear a mask when using it). At least that way you know you have done everything to make sure their is no cross contamination.

Thanks chase! Staph is a hard one isnt it as I read that 40% of dogs carry staph and you wouldn't even know it. I disinfect my blades, bath and table after every dog and disenfect my hands before I start the dog to prevent the spread of anything but it just freaks me out when I see an infected dog, I didn't end up doing the dog, I told them to go to the vet.

One thing that people forget about is that you can transfer infections from your clothing. thats why i always have a spare clean apron i can always change into if i have worked on infected dog. another thing i do is have a pair of shoes i only wear in my shop so i'm not carrying anything from my shoes into my home.
