Styptic powder for birds? Empty Styptic powder for birds?

Post by snaggywoo Thu Oct 11, 2012 8:09 pm

A friend asked me whether the same styptic powder we use to stop bleeding dog nails can be used for birds?

I said that I thought it would be ok.

Did I give the right advice or should I tell her she needs specific styptic powder for birds?

I would have done the same but I know you can use cornflour or apparently a cake of soap works as well.

Styptic powder is fine for birds. I breed & hand raise parrots & clip bird claws at my Dog Grooming Salon. Only thing is if you make it bleed, apply pressure with the powder to the nail for 1 minute. If the bird has any concrete or nail grinding perches in their cage, remove them for 24 hours as they can make the nail bleed again.
