NOT SO GOOD NEWS FOR CHASE
For the last couple of weeks I have been very focused on getting chase’s back better. While there has not been much improvement it has not become worse.
In all this time though I have notice changes to the shape of his head, but because each time I was going to the vet so focused on his leg kept forgetting to mention it. well this time I didn’t have to mention it because the short period of time between vet visits it change drastically that the vet picked it up the moment I went in.
Cut a long story short, I have now discovered that chase has a rare receive genetic disorder that has only recently come up in the Vizsla breed. There are 56 cases in the U.K but only 2 reported case in Australia called myositis. It’s wastage of the muscle in the top of the skull and the bottom of the jaw. This eventually leads to him not being able to eat or drink without chocking or regurgitation.
Now in some cases it only occurs in the top of the skull which is more of a vanity thing (this is where I am hoping it will stop with chase) but in most cases in leads to muscle wastage in the jaw and sometimes in the entire body. To much research on the net has not been good because its showed me what could happen in the future and it does not look pretty.
It has now turned into a waiting game for both his back and his head, so I have changed tactics on his treatment. If he does deteriate more I don't want his good days to be cooped up in the backyard waiting for his back to heal. So this is where I need help, I want to find some sort of back/leg brace to get him into so he has more freedom to do what he likes. I only made this decision after going the vet so have not discussed this with him yet, but while I was there he did agree for slow walks on lead to release a bit of energy. I have been trying to find something for back support on the net but with no luck. so if you have any ideas and if anyone has had any experience with muscle wastage please let me know.
I have added photos of his head year ago and now. It looks bad but when I compared the photos I got a big shock.

OH WOW! got to admit when you posted the pic of him in his pen i thought his head looked a little out of the norm!
This is terrible news but stay hopful that it all stops at his scull!!!!
As Animalia has said make sure you inform the breeder as they may not know it is present in their lines and will need to do some testing. and the breeding club so they can make sure the breeder is doing what they need to do to get the gene out of there lines..
I hope all goes well for chase.

Re: NOT SO GOOD NEWS FOR CHASE
I did inform the breeder as soon as I found out 1. Because it is recessive, so any of his brothers or sisters could be carriers (I know they breed from chases sister) and 2. To try and get more information about it.
I asked her if she could give me some info about the disease and if there is anything that vet should test for.
I initially had contact with the breeder with chases back problems when she asked for photos of him. When I told her about chases head she said "we thought his head looked strange in the photos you sent" I immediately thought well why didn't you say something to me.
She then said yes there are cases of muscle wastage recently come up in the breed,Bad news is if it is he could have trouble swallowing. Let me know what happens.
I know she is not a vet but I really thought she would have a bit more info to tell me. I had thought of contacting the Vizsla club of Vic but have found out that my breeder has become president so not much help there.
I will try again with the breeder and prob send the photos above to her.
What annoys me the most is that his not even 4. To young to be having so many problems

So sad chase but let's hope it stops there . I don,t know the history as I,m new but as far as the back is concerned maybe try acupuncture there have been great results with acupuncture helping back probes I don,t know were you are but I have a great vet in Canberra who is holistic and she could probably advise of one where you are maybe . Also does a lot with alternative and complimentary treatments let me know if you would like further info.

Re: NOT SO GOOD NEWS FOR CHASE
I would love the info Karen I'm from Melbourne. My vet was looking into acupuncture but wasn't sure if it would help hit particular case. But I'm willing to try anything just a matter of finding the right person.I'm not sure where to look so a referal would be great.
Thanks guys for your support, if good thoughts and prayers could make him better he would be 110%.

So sorry for you and Chase. Let's hope things don't fo any further. Also, for his back, try a chiropractor, usually the greyhound .people use them to keep their dogs in top shape

I sent the above photo's to my breeder and i think they shocked her. Now she has referred me to two people who specialise in ilnesses and disorders in vizsla's. Hopefully something good will come out of it

So sorry to hear about your dilemma and chases medical issues
Stumbled across these looking for something else think it might be what you need for the walking

Also Tails a waggin' (Sarah) has a vet she recommends very highly if you do not get answers
Prayers and thoughts are with you at this time that all goes well for him...You are right he is way to young to be suffering such problems

Re: NOT SO GOOD NEWS FOR CHASE
Thanks Donna
I am currently using tails vet he is very good and working hard to find solutions. He is trying to do everything for his leg to avoid surgery. Surgery is very risky and involves something on the lines of popping the back bones to release pressure. It’s not always successful
Thanks for the links I will take a look at them

Re: NOT SO GOOD NEWS FOR CHASE
Thought you guys would like and update.
I have been sending non stop emails between chases breeder and other Vizsla breeders. I found that the disease in Vizslas is so new and with so many variables that not even my breeder has grasped the concept of it. But since being in contact with the head of the NSW Vizsla club she has sent us both a lot of information and open both our eyes to the disease. My breeder has become very helpful and assisting me as much as possible.
I was also sent information to pass to my vet about the head of neurology at Melbourne Uni vet school. Apparently he specialises in Muscles and nerves and can assist my vet in testing and assessing chase.
As for Chase he has been on a new medication for about 5 days now and although his back shows no difference his spirit and energy have lifted, so I am hoping this is a good sign that he is not feeling as much discomfort.
I will tell you one thing though, by the time this all finishes I will be an expert

Re: NOT SO GOOD NEWS FOR CHASE
How did you get on with the back support for walking?? Is a short walk still an option with this new info??

Re: NOT SO GOOD NEWS FOR CHASE
I did take him for a couple of short walks before this medication and I could see he was holding his leg up more then usual. He is a bit of a nut case and I didn't think the sling to hold up his back end would have gone well for him.
I don't like using harneses on big dogs for every day use but I think this is an exception. I don't want a collar around his neck because I feel it may not be very good for his back.
So now that his on this medication I'm going to attempt a walk again but with a harness. My friend is a seamstress so I am going to get her to add to it. I have an old wet suit which I will modify to the harness and strap his lower back hopefully giving him support to keep it straight.
I Am still taking every opportunity given to me and Karen is looking into holistics for me which I am very much grateful to all the help
Thanks again for your help guys. It feels like I'm not alone when there is a whole community helping out.

Re: NOT SO GOOD NEWS FOR CHASE
Just thought I might give an update on chase. For the past three weeks chase has not held his leg up at all I am so happy it’s as if something clicked into place in his back.
He is now going on half hour walks everyday compared to only three times a week and even getting a bit off lead again. I have yet to take him running but I think it would be a good 6 month before I do that with him because I am a little worried it will reinflame. I don't know if it was the glucosamine that kicked in, physio from the short walks or the body just heeled itself but I am just glade he is back to normal.
As for his head the top of his head is still sunken in and even though it sometimes looks fuller somedays I think by now its permanent. The good news is that their has been no signs of it effecting any other part of his head or his body for that matter so I am really happy with the outcome. Mum keeps suggesting she knit him a hat for when his out in public (she thinks she a comedian)
