RAW FEEDING.....
ok,so i have had a few people ask me about the raw feeding.
I couldnt possibly give a thorough explanation of this biologically appropriate style of dog feeding ,in a short message here on the forum.
I have been a raw feeder for over 20 years now,and my best recommendation to people wanting sound information and a solid starting base ......Check out the link below ,and BUY the books "Give Your Dog A Bone " & "Grow Your Pups With Bones" . They are an invaluable reference ,and will completely explain the reasons and the methods ,and blow several myths off for you too.
If you REALLY want to do raw feeding ,and are TRULY dedicated to it....spend the dollars and get the books.
Ok,just a very quick outline of my feeding regime.....
The staple food in our house is whole raw chicken carcass, plus one portion daily of ONE of the following.....yoghurt ,cottage cheese, oily fish, offal, eggs, vege pulp, and occasional small red meat bones such as lamb ribs/necks.
We do not feed any commercial dog food ,we do not cook any of the dogs food ,and we give no treat food.
You do need to know more than these simple ingredients to do the raw feed properly and safely.
http://www.barfworld.com/html/dr_billinghurst/books_videos.shtml
of course there are always the "BARF patties " for those that want an 'off the shelf' product.

RAW FEEDING.....
I've decided I'm going raw....HELP!!
overweight Border collie, Malt/shitz with food allergies ( I don't want her on cortisone again)
been doing some research...read the posts...now I've ordered the books, all I have to do now is DO IT!!!
It is so confusing though...but I'm sure the books will help with that. I have also tracked down a barf pattie supplier locally as I can be a bit lazy in the kitchen sometimes.
Tammy can I call on you if I need help...I'm just a bit overwelmed with conflicting information about grains, suppliments etc Once I get the books I'm sure I will work it out..I hope!!

Re: RAW FEEDING.....
you'll be fine !
just relax, get the books, and read them...."give your dog a bone " first off.
Things will become much clearer once you have a look at it.
There are several sections regarding vitamins and minerals, grains ,vegetables ,supplements etc etc ,in the book ,that can make for heavy reading, but these days you are lucky, the BARF patties take all the guess work out of it.
Once you fully understand the 'balance over time ' theory you will calm down and relax too. Sadly we have been brainwashed to think dogs need to be fed every conceivable nutrient at EVERY meal, that every meal should be 'complete & balanced' ...this is wrong ,wrong!!
If you can get raw chicken pieces, barf patties ,and a few other simple ingredients from the supermarket, you're all set..
of course you are welcome to ask me questions ,i'll do my best to help

Re: RAW FEEDING.....
this in a nutshell would fix all skin allergy problems in my opinion, I have had the saints on it for about 10 years now, no more growing problems causing bone issues, no stinky smells in the back yard, no fly problems, strong healthy puppies, less mess when weaning puppies, and it is so cheap! I have probably converted about 2% of my customers over the years, but most people don't like the thought of the work involved or handling raw meat, last year I had been in touch with the state supplier of BARF patties to get some in stock to encourage some customers to change over more easily.

Re: RAW FEEDING.....
Good on you Susanne
seeing is believing ,thats for sure ....the proof really is in the pudding,so to speak.
Many people sort of half -heartedly give the raw a try, with mixed results, and of course ,these people end up detractors of the RAW & BARF "oh,i tried it (for 6 days while i still fed a couple of smacko treats, rawhides, and spaghetti bolognese each day) & its nonsense " etc etc.....
There is more to it than popping a chicken neck on top of a bowl of kibble !
You have to believe in it & stick to it for a while

Raw Feeding
With that web site you gave us Tammy, do you have to pay the membership fee before you can buy the book?
After reading about the melamine in the dog foods I have taken mine off all dog foods. So Im changing over to raw foods. I have bought some patties and they absolutely love them. I have a local supplier of raw food patties, so Im lucky. I just dont know yet what else to give them. I am giving them sardines, salmon and tuna from a tin so I guess thats wrong. They love raw vegetables with some fish mixed through it.

Re: RAW FEEDING.....
i doubt you would need to be a member to buy the books.
http://www.barfaustralia.com/
Just click on 'order book'
If you are happy with the BARF patties, all you really need to do is also feed a portion of raw bone ,like chicken necks/wings/bits ,each day ......so for a small dog ,maybe 1/2 pattie AM,1 or 2 chicken necks PM
and if you like add a small serve one raw ingredient each day to the pattie.....yoghurt,cottage cheese, oily fish(salmon/sardines/mackeral),egg,liver,heart,kidney.......dont fuss with vegie pulp if you use the patties....
It really is that easy if you use the patties, but to be really aware of what/why/how of what you're doing,i suggest "Give Your Dog A Bone" ...just remember that it was written pre-BARF pattie days ...."The Barf Diet " is sort of a pocket version of Give Your Dog A Bone
The book "Grow Your Pups With Bones " is my personal favourite. It enlightens one about just how extensive the damage is to the domestic dog population as a result of many generations of commercial feeding .
The most important thing to remember with bones and BARF diets is TRIM THE FAT OFF .....always trim areas of hard white fat off bones. A small dog can/will get an attack of pancreatitis from eating even a teaspoon of that hard white fat .Please dont let that scare you off, just remember to do it. I have happily fed several chihuahuas and never had a problem, you just must be aware of that fact.

Raw feeding
Tammy I am so lucky I have a distrubitor of barf patties in the next suburb. I will get that book.
At the moment my boys have a chicken wing with all skin and fat taken off , thats for breakfast.
They have a bowl of raw vegetables, and cooked brown rice with tin salmon or tuna or sardines., and raw chicken breast as well. And I put some barf pattie in with that, they come back for seconds.
That is the best I can do until I get this book.

Re: RAW FEEDING.....
yum,can i come live at your place
sounds pretty good to me....you will discover that the raw vegetable pieces are of almost no nutritional value .Only do it for their enjoyment. Also the brown rice is a wasted effort...its essentially a cooked grain ,just like in the tins and bags.I'm not sure where the notion comes from that dogs should eat pasta & rice also the raw chicken breast is nice for them ,although not essential if they get wing/bones.
Its the bone that is the most critical nutrition in the raw diet. A dog fed just meat will actually become sickly.
You are doing fine though. That is a great start. WELL DONE
ps...just in case you do,i will mention now that a raw diet is just that....absolutely none of those hideous "Schmacko" treats and the like...like mars bars for dogs those things !!

Raw feeding
I have taken my boys off all dog treats, and dog foods. Jasper has come a long way already.
As soon as he came off the dry food he improved. He always had a sensitive stomach, or a fat intolerance. Could not change his diet in the least little way or he would be sick. Now that he is off all that he can eat pretty well anything with no reaction, as long as it is not processed dog food.
My boys love their new diet.

raw feeding
I have had trouble changing one of my standard poodles (boston) over to raw, he gets the runs and it smells so off..... even has accidents in the house (normally he would hold on until he gets outside no problem), do you think its is just the change over ? I was giving him chicken frames(maybe I gave him too much) is two frames too much at a time? I really want to do this, also what would you use as a training treat?
any advise would be get

Re: RAW FEEDING.....
i give Troy 1.5 or 2 whole frames each day ,with all the really big hunks of fat taken off. He is a lean dog,and depending on his energy levels, sometimes he even gets 3.
Could you try giving him minced chicken frames (pet store chicken mince) and see if he does any better on that . If he still has the same trouble, then a trip to the vet might be wise (find a vet sympathetic to raw feeding tho)
It may be that Boston doesnt tolerate chicken,or perhaps he has colitis or some other condition making the transition difficult.
I prefer physical/verbal praise as 'training treats' ,but if you use food ,try oven baking slices of raw liver in the oven, until they are hard, then let them cool and cut them up. Its really quick to do,and only make enough for a week because its fresh food it will perish .

No, you don't have to be a member to order the books. The link takes you to Amazon. I have purchased The Barf Diet and I really like it because it gives a lot more detail about feeding cats. I have finally switched my cats over after reading it. But Give Your Dog a Bone has tons of really great info that The Barf Diet doesn't cover all of. Buy 'em all, you won't regret it.
My dogs really love raw green beans. For their veggie meals I juice them into pulp, but for snacks, I toss them whole raw green beans, carrots, overripe fruit pieces......they love them. My doberman loves carrots, but my JRT doesn't so much, but they both love raw green beans. My JRT will pick them herself from our garden and eat them and when we are harvesting them, my dobe is right there waiting for his lot. LOL. I have to admit, I eat them raw while picking them, too.

Do you get your chicken frames from a butcher?
Are they ok to feed to a small poodle?

They also like science diet because the company that makes it sponsors vet schools and vet research, pays them financial bonuses depending on the volume they sell, and sadly, because they actually believe ,even taught at vet school,to believe ,that is IS good for dogs !
I buy my chicken frames from a poultry processor ,like 40 kgs at a time ! The dogs have their own freezer(and its better stocked than ours !) you can ask your local butcher.Do you have 'leonards' in your state ,or another franchise specialty chicken store? down here you can also buy them at most supermarkets.
I feed my toy poodle and my chihuahua x on bits of frame for years, and all my chihuahuas before that. never a problem. I do steer clear of necks for the tiny dogs ,as they are a bit of a choking hazard for some that dont chew their food properly.I dont have any problems with jiggedy, jaggedy bits hacked off the frames.

Gees maybe I might have to get my boys their own freezer too.
How many dogs do you have Tammy?
We dont have leonards here that I know of. But there is a poultry abator about 15 to 20 minutes away. Probably have to buy in bulk.

Re: RAW FEEDING.....
I don't do the raw food diet - I may have to repent. My mother was a staunch proponent of Juliet De Bareclai Levy - i have probably spelt this wrongly. Who proposed all natural food and herbs. she raised Pekes on this diet and had the only free whelping Pekes we knew of!!
What I can add to the discussion, is that for those in Melbourne, I can give a contact to a Halal Chicken place in Laverton who sells 20k of Chicken necks for $5.00.
V good value.
