Groomer Safety. Empty Groomer Safety.

Post by Sinner Wed Jul 27, 2011 2:45 pm

After reading that Emma ( emmalovesbeth) has asthma at present I thought it timely to pass on what happened to me earlier this year. I went to doctor for annual check up and after usual blood tests etc asked for a chest x-ray. I hadn't had one since the early seventies and as I had been grooming dogs for years and using high velocity driers, I was worried that my lungs may have a build up of dog hair in them as I was feeling tight across the chest when doing gym work. The report was that I may have COPD ( or Emphasema ( sp?)I was referred to a lung specialist and she diagnosed asthma....work related. I had no wheezing, cough or hadnt had an asthma attack in nearly 5oyrs...( had chilhood asthma..apparently you never "grow out" of asthma and triggers may always remain). I was put on a puffer for 3 months ( I have never had a puffer before or been on any medication. She advised me to wear a mask , which I do and have the all clear. It has made a difference ( and esp to the amount of hair in mouth) I have also cancelled the spitz and shelties ( double coated breeds ) that I used to do . I dont take cockers or cavaliers either. They are a cheap paper mask bought from Chemist and about 15c each. They are really quite comfortable to wear . We should also wear ear muffs when usin gthe Hv's. So take care ....especially you young ones that are going to spend many, many years ahead in this profession....or even look at investing and mastering the use of the clippervacs....So sorry its so long but .....there you have it!!!! Very Happy Very Happy

Great advice Jill...It is always good to share such information especially with younger groomers just starting out..Strange as it might sound things such as this are not often the first thing you think about when you start so this serves as a good reminder

Thanks Jill

I have thought about a mask and ear muffs just never got round to getting them. I already have asthma though have not have had symptoms for a few years now but should be thinking of my future. The ear muffs might stop clients from trying to talk to me whilst I'm drying too, they must think I have supersonic hearing or something lol

Just to reinforce what Jill has stated, here is a picture I took of the filter on my Liberty Dryer in the drying room and this is only 2 days worth of little fluffies, that is loose hair and dander.

As for a mask we use these ones from ProGroom, they cost a bit more but well worth it. For your ears make sure they are at least approved and you need to spend around $40 for a real good set.

Remember, you only have one set of ears and lungs Smile

Very good advice to be heard. You just don't realise do you??

I may look silly but I wear clear wrap around glasses when drying the double coats. I may have to reasses my ears although speakers have blown them out and lungs, smoker ooohhh to long........

Not that silly really, as there is nothing out there for us who have to wear glasses. Even the yard goggles have air/hair holes in them!! Anyone?

I might go out and get some masks! I have tried ear muffs before but they made me feel sea sick for some reason, plus I am almost deaf after a decade in the boarding kennel industry!

How much decibels do we need for the ear muffs to really block out the usual HV dryers that we use daily is what I am curious about? I got a pair from home improvement shops and it does block some of the noise out but I can still hear it...... and yea after a while it feels funny so I stop for a while and do something else like brushing to give the pet a break from the noise then go back to it...

I use a pair of Class 5 rated ones that are for use in noise levels 105 to 110d, here is the pair I have Ear Muffs.

Hair and dander in the lung is a big concern for me after my lungs were particularly shoddy for longer than usual during a normal flu type sickness.

I started wearing those disposible masks and they are ok, but not great. Have ran out of them now anyway and was looking at the Progroom masks thanks to the suggestion on this forum. I'm happy to pay more for something that is comfy, will last and will work! Smile

Was just wondering though, has anyone tried them with glasses on? My boss wears glasses and said he'd get one when I ordered mine as the website says they prevent fogging, but I wanted to check with someone who has actually tested it first.

Even with the lightweight masks I get a little fogging when there is a big variation in temp, just like your sunglasses when you are hot and go into airconditioning... I just adjust the mask a little. I only do a few double coats now ( pomeranians, a couple of cavs left) Very Happy Very Happy

Ahh, yea, see I like the disposable tradie masks, but they get hairy quickly and break quickly and they don't fit 'perfectly' so I still get some hair on the inside.

I thought this might be designed better... and they do look comfy.

I think I will order two next week, I've been grooming without a mask for a week or so (ran out) and I do notice a difference in how I feel

Thanks for the nudge ,I've been wondering if the Progroom masks were worth getting, but after doing 2 collies today and cleaning the filter on the dryers and air conditioner it seems a no brainer . I'll definately be ordering tomorrow, I hope they still have some left Smile

If Progroom are out of stock it wont take them long to get some or if you are comfortable with ordering online from the US, Groomers Mall have them and shipping is reasonable.
